CFO and finance leadership search.

INC'D recruits CFOs, Controllers, FP&A leaders and integration finance executives for PE-backed essential services businesses.

Finance has to run at the speed of the platform.

A PE-grade finance leader does more than close the books. They create visibility across acquired entities, establish a defensible operating cadence, support M&A, manage lenders and prepare the business for diligence long before an exit process begins.

The precise brief changes by vertical. Project accounting, recurring-service revenue, deferred revenue, inventory, route economics and percentage-of-completion each demand different experience. We do not flatten those differences into “strong finance background.”

Roles we recruit.

  • Chief Financial Officer
  • Chief Accounting Officer
  • VP Finance
  • VP FP&A
  • Corporate Controller
  • Regional Controller
  • Director of FP&A
  • Director of Financial Reporting
  • Integration Finance Director

What we assess.

  • Multi-entity reporting and consolidation.
  • PE, lender and board reporting cadence.
  • Acquisition diligence and post-close integration.
  • Cash, covenant, forecast and working-capital discipline.
  • Relevant sector accounting complexity.
  • Evidence of building the team and systems required for the next stage.

Where finance searches go wrong.

  1. A general finance background

Each sector has its own accounting: percentage-of-completion, deferred service revenue, subscription churn, insurance payment timing. A CFO who has to learn it on the job costs the business a year.

  2. Valuing acquisitions on trailing earnings alone

Value often sits in route density, recurring agreements or renewal rates. Finance leaders who miss this misprice deals.

  3. Mistaking seasonality for instability

Many of these businesses earn most of their money in a few months. A finance leader from another industry can read normal patterns as problems.

  4. Reporting that stops at the numbers

Investors need recurring revenue, service mix and density shown as drivers of value, not just a clean monthly close.

How the role changes by vertical.

Roofing
Chief Financial Officer. Runs job costing without a recurring revenue base, manages insurance payment timing, treats supplements as a revenue line and handles volatile material costs. One of the most specialized finance roles in home services, and these searches often take longer than expected.
Restoration
Chief Financial Officer. Tracks the balance of catastrophe and referred revenue, measures how closely jobs match what insurers will pay and manages four service lines with very different margins. Has to bring acquired companies onto a clean monthly close quickly.
Pool Service
Chief Financial Officer. Models seasonal cash flow, cost per account and the value of acquired routes based on density and retention. Not a general-industry finance brief.
Cleaning
Chief Financial Officer. Consolidates multiple entities, normalizes labor-heavy P&Ls and handles acquisition accounting. Needs direct experience of cleaning-sector finances.
Electrical
Chief Financial Officer. The scarcest hire in the sector: percentage-of-completion accounting, work-in-progress schedules, bonding, retainage and change orders, plus leading financial diligence on acquisitions.
Elevator
Chief Financial Officer. Owns deferred revenue from prepaid contracts, project accounting on modernizations, warranty reserves and concentration risk. Values acquisitions on renewal strength, not trailing earnings alone.
Fire & Life Safety
Chief Financial Officer. Manages four revenue streams with different recognition rules, tracks the service-to-project mix that shapes valuation, and holds strong cash conversion. A brief that exists in no other trade.
Garage Doors
Chief Financial Officer. Owns parts inventory accounting, margin tracking by installation and repair, builder payment terms and manufacturer rebates. Values acquisitions on route density and repeat repair work.
