General Manager and platform leadership search.
INC'D recruits CEOs, Presidents, General Managers and regional leaders for PE-backed essential services businesses across North America.
The operating outcome sits here.
General management is not a single profile. A branch GM owning a local P&L, a Regional Director integrating eight locations and a platform CEO carrying a value creation plan require different scale, judgment and sponsor exposure.
We distinguish between leaders who have maintained an inherited operation and those who have built management depth, integrated acquisitions, improved field performance and owned the number through a hold period.
Roles we recruit.
What we assess.
- Direct P&L and multi-site responsibility.
- Platform stage and revenue scale previously led.
- Experience integrating acquired founders, teams and systems.
- Ability to translate a value creation plan into branch-level execution.
- Credibility with both field teams and sponsor and board stakeholders.
- Evidence of building a leadership layer rather than remaining the only operator in the room.
The best-looking résumé is not always the strongest operator. We look for evidence in the work.
Where general management searches go wrong.
Mistaking title for scale
A GM who ran one branch is not automatically ready for several, and running an owner-led business is not the same as leading a larger one under investor reporting. We assess the scale and complexity a leader has actually carried.
Investor credentials without field credibility
In most of these sectors, field teams will not follow a leader who cannot talk about the work. It is one of the most common failed hires.
Founders who have not made the shift
Many strong candidates are former owners. Some have genuinely adjusted to running within a larger group; others fall back on old habits once integration pressure builds.
One leader for two different businesses
Residential and commercial, installation and service, emergency and recurring work often need different instincts. A GM strong in one can struggle in the other.
How the role changes by vertical.
- Roofing
- CEO or President. Integrates acquired roofers across regions while moving revenue from storm-heavy work toward steadier retail, commercial and maintenance work. Has to keep founders, crews and adjuster relationships intact through that change.
- Restoration
- CEO or President. Grows the share of steady, insurer-referred work, manages surge capacity after major events and sets the pace of acquisitions. Usually comes from restoration or insurance-related services rather than construction.
- Pool Service
- CEO or President. Keeps founders, technicians and customers through a fast pace of acquisitions while building route density in core markets. Needs to be credible on the technical work and fluent with investors at the same time.
- Cleaning
- General Manager. Owns a branch or regional P&L: route density, crew retention and renewal of commercial contracts, while holding quality steady through high turnover.
- Electrical
- CEO or President. Can walk a jobsite with foremen in the morning and present to investors in the afternoon. Needs genuine field credibility alongside the discipline to run acquisitions and hit earnings targets.
- Elevator
- CEO or President. Keeps founders, certified technicians and property relationships through a steady run of acquisitions, while managing parts strategy across manufacturers and code compliance across states. Needs technical credibility and investor fluency at once.
- Fire & Life Safety
- CEO or President. Sets acquisition pace against integration quality across many local jurisdictions, manages investors, and balances installation and recurring inspection work without eroding the recurring revenue that drives value.
- Garage Doors
- CEO or President. Keeps founders and technicians through a fast pace of acquisitions while balancing installation against repair, builder work against aftermarket service, and density against expansion.
How INC'D runs the search.
We build each General Manager, President or CEO search around the scale of P&L ownership, branch complexity, acquisition pace and first-year operating priorities. Candidates are assessed for the level they have genuinely led, not the title printed on their resume. A typical shortlist contains three to five qualified leaders within two to four weeks of engagement.
